The College is recognized as the pioneer in development communication teaching in the world. It has trained faculty members of state universities and colleges in the Philippines and in other countries in the Asia-Pacific region for their higher degrees in development communication. In 1999, the College was named as one of two CHED national centers of excellence in communication. The BSDC degree program has set a trend and is now the model for similar degree programs implemented by other academic institutions in the Philippines and other developing countries as well. CDC undertakes research studies in human development and the processes and structures of communication with emphasis on those that promote equity, empowerment, environmental sustainability, and peace and human rights. It undertakes training, advisory, and action projects that help build the communication capabilities and resources of people, communities, institutions, and other participants in the development process.

The College of Development Communication (CDC) served as host institution to a Fulbright researcher, Dr. Lisa Brooten of Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Dr. Brooten visited the college last June 23 – 25, 2008 as part of her data gathering for her post-doctoral research on media reform movements in Southeast Asia, particularly in Burma/Myanmar, Thailand and the Philippines. The research is a comparative study of the media in exile in Burma and the growing reforms in the commercial systems as well as the development of community media in Thailand and the Philippines.
Her visit was to explore the concept of community media, an area of study the college specializes in. Dr. Brooten interviewed some of the staff of Radyo DZLB, the educational radio station of UPLB managed by CDC under the Department of Development Broadcasting and Telecommunications (DDBT). Among her interviewees included Dr. Felix Librero, Faculty Regent and one of the pioneer broadcasters of the station who shared his experiences as community broadcaster.
Dr. Brooten is scheduled to deliver a talk about media reforms in the Philippines on July 30, 2008, 3 – 4 in the afternoon, at CDC’s Drama Studio. |
