CDC unit heads attend HEADS 2

Administrators of the College of Development Communication (CDC) attended the 2nd Higher Education Administrators' Development Seminar (HEADS) on July 2-4, 2019 at the Philippine Judicial Academy Training Center in Tagaytay City. 

The delegation from CDC was headed by Dean Dr. Maria Stella C. Tirol and composed of the chairs of the departments of development broadcasting and telecommunication, development journalism, educational communication, and science communication, namely, Dr. Benjamina Paula G. Flor, aProf. Kabzeel Sheba G. Catapang, Dr. Mildred O. Moscoso, and aProf. Garry Jay S. Montemayor, respectively. 

The seminar, organized by the UPLB Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, is designed to orient current unit heads of the university in managing an academic institution, meeting the challenges, and handling priorities in the context of the incoming Industrial Revolution 4.0, according to a memo from the Office of the UPLB Chancellor. It is envisioned to provide "an opportunity for refining managerial skills while balancing challenges and support." 

Various unit heads from UPLB attended the activity.

HEADS 2 featured the following topics and speakers:
  • Gearing towards Industrial Revolution 4.0 ' Dr. Christopher P. Monterola, professor at the Asian Institute of Management
  • Understanding UP rules and protocols ' Atty. Roberto MJ. Lara, secretary of the UP System
  • Academic freedom and ethics in institutions of higher education ' Dr. Maria Serena I. Diokno, former UP Vice President for Academic Affairs
  • Academic leadership in higher education ' Dr. Dina S. Ocampo, professor at the UP College of Education
  • Managing discussion/meetings in an academic setting ' Atty. Fides Cordero Tan, dean of the UP College of Law
  • Team and people building skills ' Dr. Sergio S. Cao, former UP Diliman chancellor
  • Quality assurance in tertiary education and other challenges faced by UP academic administrators ' Dr. Maria Cynthia Rose B. Bautista, UP VPAA

Reacting to the talk on gearing towards Indsutrial Revolution 4.0, Dean Tirol said that the CDC's offering of DEVC 127 (Data Journalism for Development) is indeed timely, as it will increase the competitiveness of BSDC students and also challenge them to become at par with their peers in the global setting. That the course in rooted in development is an advantage as the context will give more meaning to the task of crunching numbers.
