BSDC students join GA against pork barrel
Three students from the College of Development Communication (CDC) joined the recently-held Youth Against Pork General Assembly (GA) in Ateneo de Manila University on September 28. Von Yacob and Love Baurile from the CDC Student Council and Fraz Sta. Ana from UP ADS and MOVE UP were among the delegates from UPLB. Themed "Youth Leaders Taking The Lead For Good Governance," the GA was attended by various student councils, student organizations, and youth activists in Luzon.
The GA aimed to gather young people to: call for total abolition of the pork barrel; vigilantly campaign against its resurrection in any form; consolidate and communicate the youth voice; participate in the budgetary process and advance for fiscal reforms; and through cultural and other means, reach out, educate and engage more young people for involvement in the issues.
The whole day event conducted by the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC) and Youth Against Pork (YAP) included talks and workshops on the issue of the pork barrel and the Freedom of Information bill. Invited speakers were Hon. Risa Hontiveros of Akbayan Partylist, Tanya Maxine Hamada of InciteGov, Red Tani of Filipino Freethinkers, and Former Deputy Speaker Erin Tanada of Quezon Province.
Hontiveros discussed why pork barrel is wrong and how it perpetuates patronage politics while Hamada explained how youth engagement in the pork barrel issue is essential. On the other hand, Tani shared tips on how to maximize the social media for the "pork-less" campaign. Lastly, Tanada talked about the Freedom of Information bill and how it can help in the fight against corruption.
The Youth Against Pork is a national coalition of different youth organizations, students, and concerned citizens formed in response to the recent pork barrel controversy. CDC Alumni and Former CDC Student Council Vice Chairperson Garie Rigor is one of the conveners of YAP.
