CDC automates Plan of Study
The College of Development Communication (CDC) will be using the Online Plan of Study (OPS), the first and only Plan of Study automation in the University to date. The system was opened on Aug. 12, a day after Major Problem, a sophomore orientation about the different majors in CDC. For this semester, about 140 sophomore Devcom students are expected to use OPS.
The system simplifies the process by automating form creation through dropdown boxes and a drag-and-drop interface. When a student creates his Plan of Study online, the Office of the College Secretary (OCS) need not encode the courses manually. Thus, OCS may be able to quickly and accurately provide the data needed by the Office of the University Registrar and SystemOne.
This year, the College allowed students to shuffle some major courses in their timetable to give way to courses offered only during the second semester using two "maneuver" courses, DEVC 140 and DEVC 131. Previously, students may only take major electives offered in the first semester. To incorporate this, OPS was shut down from Friday 6 p.m. (Aug. 13) to Saturday 3 a.m. (Aug. 14).
However, several students reported Tuesday (Aug. 17) that there are slight inconsistencies in the system. The faculty members also requested that OPS do preliminary checking of prerequisite satisfaction of major courses.
To resolve issues on the conflicting major subjects, the OPS was shut down 5 p.m., Aug. 17. The CDC Web Development Team resolved the issue in the system and opened up the OPS again 10 a.m., Aug. 18. To aid affected students, notifications were sent via SMS instructing them to redownload and reprint their Plan of Study.
According to the Office of the College Secretary, the deadline for submission of the Plan of Study has been moved to Aug. 27, 4 p.m. However, the Online Plan of Study will be shut down Aug. 27 (10 a.m.) to promote early submission to OCS.
OPS is operational again and the team is on standby for any issues that may arise. Students are encouraged to report any concerns immediately using the 'Any Concerns?' box in the CDC website.
