CDC awards honor students, launches new publications

15 December 2011 by PBSamonte

Ninety-one College of Development Communication (CDC) honor students were awarded during the annual CDC recognition program held at the CDC Lecture Room 1, December 12.

Awardees include University Scholars (US) and College Scholars (CS) of the last two semesters. There were five US and 37 CS awardees for second semester 2010-2011 and 13 US and 63 CS awardees for first semester 2011-2012. Special awards were also given to the top three students of each batch with the highest general weighted averages (GWA).

Two notable Devcom alumni were invited to give inspirational messages during the ceremony. Ms. Leia Fidelis-Castro, Assistant Editor of the Baguio Midland Courier, talked about the three values which she rendered important as a Devcom practitioner: "service, excellence, and the never ending thirst for knowledge." Dr. Teresa Habito Stuart-Guida, retired Communication for Development specialist of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), focused on the four outcomes that should be seen in Devcom: "policy change, institutional change, service delivery change and behavior and social change." Dr. Stuart-Guida also emphasized the importance of "service to fellowmen", which she believes is the core value of a true Devcom practitioner.

The event also marked the launch of two new CDC publications. These were the Philippine Journal for Development Communication (PJDC) Vol. 3, edited by Dr. Maria Theresa H. Velasco; PJDC Vols. 4 and 5, edited by Dr. Benjamina Paula G. Flor; and the Department of Development Journalism (DDJ) Monograph on Social Enterprise spearheaded by Ms. Ricarda B. Villar. These journals will soon be available at the CDC Reading Room for students and staff.

The CDC recognition program is regularly conducted as part of the CDC anniversary celebration in which the college turns 13 this year.

The program started at 9am and ended 12nn. Dean Cleofe S. Torres delivered the anniversary message at the start of the program, while Dr. Serlie Barroga-Jamias gave the closing remarks.
