Faculty members of the College of Development Communication (CDC) attended a training-workshop for University of the Philippines Los Baņos (UPLB) faculty on outcomes-based education (OBE) for quality assurance last May 24-25, 2018. Faculty members from the College of Human Ecology (CHE) were also attendees in this two-day event held at the auditorium of the College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology (CEAT).

In his opening remarks, UPLB Chancellor Dr. Fernando Sanchez, Jr. highlighted the importance of the activity in light of efforts to ensure quality instruction, especially with the recent curricular changes approved by the UPLB University Council.

According to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Portia Lapitan, this kick-off activity of what she called "monumental one and a half month learning workshop for teaching staff" aims to familiarize participants with the philosophy of OBE in higher education, OBE in relation to ASEAN University Network quality assurance (AUN QA), and curriculum design. The goal, she said, is for undergraduate programs of UPLB to be OBE compliant, meet AUN QA standards, and undergo paradigm shift from being teacher-centered to becoming student-centered programs.

The training-workshop covered the following topics: understanding OBE, OBE curriculum design for quality assurance, and OBE and AUN QA standards for teaching learning and for student assessment. Dr. Greg Pawilen, associate professor at the CHE  Department of Human and Family Development Studies and project development associate at the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, served as the main resource person for this activity.
