CDC site adds more features and increases security

7 July 2010 by MVASantos

New Features
DevCom has recently improved its website in time for the registration, which started on June 1. Students are now required to update their profiles online before claiming their Form 5s.

This new registration requirement gives the instructors easy-access to their students' profiles online. Since profiles are easily updated online, students no longer need to notify instructors of changes in their personal information. The records and the changes, if any, will be updated automatically and are readily available to all instructors.

The site now offers faculty members a class list management interface where they can easily modify their class lists, print student information, email the whole class, and generate class lists that they need to submit to the Office of the University Registrar.

Automated
Form automation made its way to this semester's site updates. The new freshmen may now generate their GE plan of study through the CDC site. The site produces a portable document format (PDF) of a student's GE plan which must be submitted to the Office of the College Secretary (OCS).

In the annual sophomore orientation called 'Major Problem' to be held on August 2010, students will be oriented how to make their Plan of Study. The sophomores will then be able to experience the convenience of form automation as they make their Major Plan of Coursework (also known as Plan of Study) online.

The CDC Web Development Team, the group that maintains the site, wants faculty members, research and extension personnel, staff, and students to make online transactions by themselves. Thus, the team is inclined to gear all features toward automation.

Automated SMS sending is still being developed with a preliminary test done last June 6. Students who did not finalize their schedule in SystemOne were notified via SMS early Sunday morning. The test was successful, however, it may not be available for faculty use until next year.

Increased Security
On June 7, the DevCom website supported Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) connections. This means that information that travels between the CDC server and its clients are now encrypted for better security. Like e-commerce and banking websites, the CDC site protects users' privacy and keeps their accounts safe from unauthorized access.

The CDC Web Development Team or CDC Webteam functions as the College's IT group. If you are interested to become a member of the team, visit their office at the Information Technology Resources Unit (InfoTRU).
