The College is recognized as the pioneer in development communication teaching in the world. It has trained faculty members of state universities and colleges in the Philippines and in other countries in the Asia-Pacific region for their higher degrees in development communication. In 1999, the College was named as one of two CHED national centers of excellence in communication. The BSDC degree program has set a trend and is now the model for similar degree programs implemented by other academic institutions in the Philippines and other developing countries as well. CDC undertakes research studies in human development and the processes and structures of communication with emphasis on those that promote equity, empowerment, environmental sustainability, and peace and human rights. It undertakes training, advisory, and action projects that help build the communication capabilities and resources of people, communities, institutions, and other participants in the development process.

According to Dr. Cleofe Torres, CDC dean, the anniversary highlights the efforts of the college in “building on what (our) predecessors have accomplished.”
Dr. Torres has identified the nine milestones of the college: 1) the college as the only institution in the world offering a three-tiered program in development communication; 2) the college as a recipient of CHED’s Center of Excellence in Communication; 3) the ALL in CBNRM, an adaptive learning program, in cooperation with the International Development Research Centre (IDRC); 4) launching of the Philippine Journal of Development Communication; 5) awarding of professorial chair lectures for 2008 to five senior faculty members; 6) recognition of Dr. Nora Quebral, professor emeritus in development communication, as the first Hildegard awardee for women in media and communication given by the St. Scholastica’s College-Manila 7) improvements in the present curriculum and introduction of the generalist track; 8) improvement of college facilities and equipment; and 9) linkages and partnerships with local, regional, and international institutions.
To mark the two-day celebration, a lineup of activities was prepared by the faculty, staff, and students of the college. These activities include an opening and closing program, a photo exhibit, and a talent’s showcase. Prof. Maria Teresita B. Osalla of the Department of Development Broadcasting and Telecommunication (DDBT), was the head of the committee in charge of this year’s celebration.
